Hello, fellow whisky lovers! I’m excited to share with you my latest tasting adventure with a remarkable dram from the Isle of Harris Distillery called, The Hearach. This is a journey of flavours and heritage, and I can’t wait to dive into the details with you.
The Isle of Harris Distillery
The Isle of Harris Distillery, though famed for its gin since 2017, has stepped into the whisky world as of September 22, 2023. It is something that I’ve been waiting for for quite some time since my son and daughter-in-law – my daughter-in-law is from the Outer Hebrides – went back to my daughter in law’s home and visited her grandparents and they paid a visit to the distillery.
They toured the Isle of Harris Distillery, where they learned about the upcoming whisky and the unique “1916” club – named after the island’s original population. As a founder member, thanks to my family’s gesture, I am honoured to be among the “1916” and hold a lifetime guest status.
The distillery’s first whisky release was an event of high anticipation. As one of the 1916 founding members, I received one of the first 1916 bottles from their inaugural batch. My bottle, numbered #16145, is a treasure I intend to keep unopened for a special occasion.
Meanwhile, I couldn’t resist sampling their whisky from the third of their eight initial releases.
Unboxing The Hearach
The bottle’s design is a nod to the Harris Gin aesthetic, featuring an elegant and familiar style. This whisky has undergone a meticulous production process, with up to five days of fermentation and a five-year maturation period in a trio of cask types: Bourbon, Oloroso Sherry, and Be no buts.
Pouring
Upon pouring, its pale hue and ‘nice legs’ are immediately noticeable. The aroma is a gentle bouquet of smoke, red apples, cherries, vanilla, and honey, with a subtle hint of spices like ginger. It’s a delicate and inviting introduction.
The Tasting Experience
Tasting the whisky reveals its complexity and charm. It’s sweet, echoing the freshness of cut apples and the rich, solid texture of Scottish tablet – a traditional confection similar to fudge but firmer. Notes of apples, moped, and a nutty flavour add depth, complemented by a smooth mouthfeel appropriate for a 46% ABV malt. It’s delicate yet memorable.
Adding water unveils new dimensions, softening the already light peat smoke. This whisky is an ideal choice for those who prefer a milder peat presence. Its light peating process, evident in the barely-there phenols, makes it approachable and very enjoyable.
