Poit Dhubh (pronounced Potch Goo) is Gaelic for black pot, a so called illicit still and this is a sturdy blended malt.
The colour of this dram appeals to me as I’m a big fan of secondary finishing in sherry or rum casks, and this suggested that type of finish.
The nose has lots of sweetness that you’d expect from a sherry with vanilla and a little peat. It’s also a bit woody.
The nose leads you to an expectation on the palate and this was a bit of a surprise as it didn’t deliver a throat punch of peat but instead a great balance of peat and smoke and sweet caramel and is really smooth. I also love the flavour of dark fruits and the hint of nutmeg.
The finish is long and pleasant and has a great mouthfeel and would pair well with dark chocolate.
I’m not a “malt snob” and am happy to drink interesting blends and this certainly falls into this category.
